This is a local Cuban restaurant that has been around for years. The place is low key and caters to locals, making it the best kept secret. The staff iarr great and the service is fast. Don't expect a lot of attention or bothersome interference while eating, this is all about the great authentic Cuban cuisine. The Cuban sandwiches are the best I have had, and breakfast is just as good. Do yourself a favor and get away from the tourist joints that serve garbage food and stale beer.

Let's be clear. The ambiance isn't great. If you're unfamiliar with Stock Island, well, let's just say that the location leaves a little to be desired. And the interior isn't that much more appealing than the exterior (which isn't great). And the food, well, it's not all that. So why, you might ask yourself, do I give it four stars? Because the food is good, and it's inexpensive. All things being equal, I'd go to Jose's. Better food, better service. But the people at El Mocho clearly care about what they're serving you. And if you make sure you order one of the dishes that matter to them (a ropa vieja, an oxtail soup, anything from the specials menu, and so on) you're in for a real treat. And, if you've been paying Key West prices for a while, you will be shocked at how inexpensive some good food can be. So some protips- first time I went here, I came with a kid. No matter how picky the kid is, do not order off the kids menu. I know, shocker. But on the plus side, his (not quite reheated) nuggets were so bad he managed branch out and eat some of our food. Next, the fish sandwich is not good. At least it wasn't when I ordered it. Way too salty, didn't seem fresh (which is not good for Key West). Everything else was fantastic. Highly recommend checking the specials board when you walk in.

We wanted authentic Cuban food before heading home after visiting Key West. The food is home made. The bread was light and flavourful and the Cuban Mixed Meat sandwich is big enough for two. The pot roast special with yuca and red beans and rice was delicious. We had fresh watermelon juice with the meal and it hit the spot. The deserts are all made in house by Lisbeth (a real sweetheart) and the Flan Cubano was to dream about. Try the Cuban coffee if you dare. It is a local restaurant and I hesitate to give a five star review as I wouldn't want it be overrun by tourists (like I am), but the locale and decore might not be to everyone's taste.

I love El Mochos! Coladas are perfect, the food is great, the prices are wonderful and the people are who work here are absolutely fantastic. You feel like family. They remember your name! I don't know how that's even possible when they are as busy as they are. I love the laid back, the casual atmosphere and the consistency. The ladies who work here really take care of you. I wish I had time in my schedule to come everyday!

After a week in Key West, paying high prices for mediocre meals, El Mocho's was a great surprise. The best food we've had at an incredibly reasonable price. I would definitely recommend it.

This place is easy to pass up so keep you eyes open. We ordered the roast pork sandwiches and they were pretty good but not as good as some I've had. I'd stop by again in a pinch though.

Dumpy outside, dumpy inside...but man, some damn good Cuban food. It kills me to say this, but aside from the tostones, this beats out El Sibonney in town. Much more limited menu, but they have the standards, and less pricey. Sorry el sib! And stock island location is more convenient too. PS-Parking was ample.

It doesn't get more authentic than this hole-in-wall Cuban joint. The entire family is back there cooking up authentic Cuban dishes--it's about the cheapest place to eat around Key West. (But El Mocho is located on Stock Island, about 5-miles from downtown Key West.) Open from 6am to 3pm, this is where the local workers and islanders in-the-know grab a cheap bite to eat. I love their Cuban breakfast sandwich--you can pick your favorite breakfast goodies and they'll press it between warm soft Cuban bread. Squirt some hot sauce on that and pretend you're in Cuba. And did I mention the Cuban coffee? The surrounding neighborhood looks dirty/sketchy, but I've always felt safe. If you're camping at Boyd's, El Mocho is a must for breakfast or lunch and is only a short 3 minute walk from the campground. If you're downtown Key West, it's probably not worth the drive. Note: my husband doesn't want me to post this review: "Don't wreck this diner. If you write a review we're going to come back and it's going to be filled with hipsters."

Avoid the Tamales. At $2 each, they are a rip off. Very bland, and you can't even taste the meat.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
